That line, from the quintessential Bandy song “Soft Lights and Hard Country Music,” sums up his aesthetic quite nicely, but what it doesn’t tell you is that Bandy seemed to be the only country singer who had that aesthetic in the 1970s and early 1980s. The Mississippi-born Bandy was raised in Texas and on the music of fellow Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers, honky-tonk master Hank Williams, and eventually his idol George Jones–hear how Bandy pronounces “woman” in “I Just Started Hatin’ Cheatin’ Songs Today” for proof of his reverence for Possum. Despite the country-pop trends of the day, he saw no reason to ever stray far from the hardcore honky-tonk that’s as natural in Texas as cowboy hats. You might say he presaged the neotraditionalism of the late 1980s, except that he really wasn’t “reviving” anything. He was merely playing the music he’d always loved, and since all 20 of the singles on this collection hit the Top 25, it appears that fans still loved hard country too, no matter what the popular style was at the time. After all, “a steel guitar in a dim-lit bar knows exactly how I feel.” –Marc Greilsamer

The Roundup – What’s Happening today in Country Music, Vol 6

Catch up on your favorite stars of country music. excerpt:

More than 13,000 people packed into the Branson Convention Center for the all-day event preceding the weigh-in ceremony.

Toddlers caught fish in a tiny tank while pros discussed lures with eager hobbyists.
Vendors peddled rods and reels and spinners and swimmers and spoons.

Country singer Moe Bandy sang the national anthem before a 15-foot blimp, shaped like a fish, floated around the room.

One by one, anglers grabbed their catches by the gills and held them up to the crowd.
There were gasps and cheers as the bass hit the scales and the weight was announced and recorded.

Read the rest of the story here:
<a Groman for Branson Tourism Center, December 1st, 2009

The Moe Bandy show is simply great fun and entertainment with great singing, comedy and playing. Although the show has no specific Christmas segment, there are Christmas numbers seamlessly worked into a show filled with great music and comedy that results in one of the most enjoyable entertainment experiences in Branson.

The band is outstanding and composed of some of the best instrumentalists in Branson, Ricky Boen, fiddle and guitar; Mark Boyd, guitar; John Clark, steel guitar and fiddle; Mark Evans, bass guitar; Bruce Hoffman, fiddle and guitar; Nicko Ochoa, drums and Ed Synan, piano.

The show’s female vocalist is Kari Garrison who does a great job not only as a backup singer but on a number of solos. Her rendition of the Christmas song, “Let’s Make A Baby King” at the beginning of the second half of the show was wonderful and demonstrated the range and quality of her voice. Her duet with Moe of “I Can’t Feel Christmas Without You” was another highlight.

The comedy of Perry Edenburg as “Harley Worthit” will have you laughing from the pre-show to the end of the show. Most of his outfits are outrageous and as funny as his jokes and antics. He does a number of routines by himself and some with his “straight man,” Moe Bandy,” but it is all so funny. One thing for sure, just about the time you think you can’t laugh anymore, along comes another skit such as the one to the music of “Come A Little Bit Closer” and you find out you were wrong.

Moe Bandy sings, and plays straight man to Harley Worthit, but it is his marvelous ability to relate to his audience and the way he sings and presents his music in a way that seems to speak to the ordinary person that makes this show so special. Even the old standard “White Christmas” just seemed different in the context of this show.

Moe sings a variety of songs including many of hits including “Bandy the Rodeo Clown,” “Rodeo Romeo,” and many more including two personal highlights ,“Americana” and “Too Old to Die Young.” Among others, he also did “Mid Night Rodeo,” a song from his new album and a neat medley of songs from other stars such as Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire, ” Marty Robbins “Devil Woman,” Freddy Fender’s “I’ll Be There before the Next Tear Drops Falls” and “George Jones “White Lightning.”

This is an unpretentious music and comedy show that provides two of the most fun filled and enjoyable hours of entertainment in Branson. It will go by so fast you will find yourself wishing for “Moe.”

For tickets or information on the “Moe Bandy Show” or any other Branson shows or attraction and lodging information or reservations please contact the Branson Tourism Center (BTC) one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services and sellers of Branson show and attraction tickets and lodging. It was 1975 and Moe had decided to “hock everything” for just one more recording session. Moe has had many more hit songs and five Gold Albums. Bandy the Rodeo Clown was the first #1. Moe and his brother Mike were rodeo riders, so Moe comes by his cowboy songs honestly, even growing up on a real ranch.

Moe says one day when he was feeling particularly bumped and bruised he just decided there had to be a better way to keep yourself busy … and make a living while doing it! So he got serious about his music career.

The tone of Moe’s songs has changed a bit over the years. ‘Til I’m too Old to Die Young is a touching song that parents love, “Let me watch my children grow, to see what they become … ’til I’m too old to die young.” Americana is another very moving song, “Pictures of a people proud and free.” Americana became the theme song for the first President Bush’s campaign in 1992 and began a friendship between the two that still exists.

Kerry Garrison is the very talented female vocalist in the show. Her performance in “The Sparkin’ Game” is especially entertaining — hilarious! “Tater Patches” is one of the contestants vying for the “Bachelorette’s” vote. “Tater” is Moe’s comic sidekick, and Moe is a perfect straight man.

Moe’s Americana Band is topnotch, some of the best players anywhere, and several of the band members, like Nick Ochoa, Sean Pittman and Barry Bales, have been with Moe for many years. Moe brought the band and his own special music and style to Branson in 1990. Before that he spent more than sixteen years “on the road.” He still travels and does some performing on the road during the winter months.

You’ll enjoy Moe Bandy and all his talented band and cast in the Jim Stafford Theatre, on Hwy. 76.

Have fun! Bandy was taught to play the guitar by his father, but made little use of the ability until he was in his teens.

“My father taught me a few chords on the banjo, so I knew a little bit,” Bandy said. “They used to dress me up in a little cowboy hat. I’d sing in talent contests and I also played for relatives.”

As Bandy grew older, he fell in love with the sport of rodeo. He tried bronco-busting and bull-riding and by the time he was 16, he was competing in rodeos all over Texas.

“I put my music aside and concentrated on being a rodeo rider,” Bandy said. “I also worked as a sheet-metal worker in addition to being out on the road all the time. But I loved it all the same.”

In 1962, after breaking the same collar bone twice in the same week and getting a horn to his left side, he began to pursue a career in country music.

Bandy and a few fellow musicians began playing during their downtime when they were asked to play in a bar.

“We played that first night and got a great response,” Bandy said. “They invited us back, and Moe Bandy and the Country Partners were paid $5 a night.”

For the rest of the story click here:
http://www.bransondailynews.com/story.php?storyID=12602
